What Are you doing for Art This Year?

As the school year approaches, I know many homeschool moms are pouring over curriculum, going to co-op meetings, ordering materials, and getting your schooling space organized. For me, I loved this time of year. Dreaming and goal setting, I call this process setting yourself up for success! Because let’s be honest, Moms(and Dads) drive the teaching and learning of your school year, whether you are a homeschooling family or in a regular school setting. Are you adding art into your child’s Classical Education?

I have some suggestions to aid in this process especially if you are on the fence about including art in your homeschool week. Yes, the answer is YES, don’t think about it, it is an ABSOLUTE MUST like Latin! Over my twenty years in classical education, I have seen how art has changed lives and it is vital to your child’s classical education (for more read about this here).

You might be asking yourself,

  • Is art really important or just fun?

  • Do I have to get all those supplies, it is so expensive?

  • How much time should I schedule?

  • I have all ages to school how can I possibly find something for everyone?

One of the best ways I know to accomplish this is to first, decide what you would like your art lessons to be. Is your goal for art to be a lighter subject integrated with other subjects, diving deep into the life of one artist, or are you tackling art appreciation this year? The second thing is to craft a clear plan. Having a goal and a plan provides you with confidence, saves time and energy, and provides a framework for when that spur of the moment inspiration strikes or if your plans for the day change, it allows you to get back on track easily.

Here are some Ideas

  1. I would like to invite you to check out my Guide for Kid’s Art Lessons. It is a downloadable pdf, it is convenient and can help you set up art lessons for a successful year of art using the artwork you and your children are interested in.

  2. As mentioned above another way to get art into your school day is to integrate subjects. I have done just that with Art and Literature. Little Learners Art and Literature is like having me as a read-aloud and art teacher in your home! Little Learners Art & Literature, is a wonder-filled time of creating and learning, rich in classical literature. Perfect! Two- birds-with-one-stone in one convenient monthly subscription. Read on for more details.

  3. Be strategic, plan an individual art class and learn a skill or use a new medium. Visit the A La Carte Classes on the website.

  4. Go To a Virtual Art Exhibit. More visits will be added this year, check out my curated list here.
