 In the Spirit Exhibit

Featuring Native American Artwork

This art exhibit is part of an annual art festival celebrating the indigenous people of the pacific northwest and is held on the land of The Puyallup Tribe of Indians. This is included on the website and I really love this acknowledgment by the partnering museums.

The In The Spirit: Northwest Native festival partnering museums acknowledge that we learn, live, reflect, and teach on the ancestral lands of the Coast Salish people. As our museums are specifically situated on the traditional homeland of the Puyallup Tribe of Indians, we make intentional efforts to create inclusive and respectful partnerships that honor Indigenous cultures, histories, identities, and sociopolitical realities
— This land acknowledgment was inspired by the School of Education at UW Tacoma’s land acknowledgment.

My mom and I explored the In the Spirit Contemporary Native Arts exhibition. There was a People’s Choice award at the Washington State History Museum. The Native Portraiture: Power and Perception is part of the permanent collection as well as On Native Land, this exhibit featured landscape paintings paired with land acknowledgments to recognize more than 75 Native American communities whose homelands are, at the Tacoma Art Museum.

The following photos were taken at the In the Spirit Contemporary Native Arts exhibition. This exhibit was so beautiful and representational of how this people group is resilient and proud of their culture. I was captivated.
