Little Learners Art and Literature

a story is a way to say something that can’t be said any other way...You tell a story because a statement would be inadequate

As you know I am passionate about God, teaching, art, and reading! I have been dreaming about a new art curriculum, for some time now, that would support elementary students (pre-k-3rd) and integrate literature too. This isn’t a new idea, art integrated with literature, however, my intention is classical in nature, focusing on classical tales, Caldacotte medalists, fables, fairy tales, stories about art or artists, and stories with themes based on virtue.

Studies show that exposing children to good literature at a young age can begin to shape their “moral imagination”. This term was coined by the Anglo-Irishman writer and statesman Edmund Burke and turned up as a reference in a book I recently read on the subject of virtue called Tending the Heart of Virtue by Vigen Guroian. In an article Guroian wrote, he said it this way,” The great fairy tales and fantasy stories capture the meaning of morality through vivid depictions of the struggle between good and evil, where characters must make difficult choices between right and wrong, or where heroes and villains contest the very fate of imaginary worlds.” Have I piqued your interest? I hope so! Integrated learning that is art-based is a powerful way for students to learn.

In addition, I’m also excited by what this course provides you as a busy parent. This course is a subscription and would provide families with classical art and literature right to your computer each month. It can easily be an independent activity for your kiddos or it can be used to augment current home learning in art and literature. It is versatile and you can access its contents as often as you wish, getting a new story unit each month. For about the price of a couple of lattes each month you get quality art and literature instruction for a year and I am able to serve my online learning audience more fully.

This is still developing but your subscription would include: video instruction of a beautiful hands-on project that uses simple common materials, an audio version of the story by me, which can be listened to independently, with additional ideas to try and downloadable pdfs.

YES! I know, doesn't this sound delightful! Well worth the magical price! My first installment will be one of Beatrix Potter's tales. Oh, you are going to love it!

The question is not, how much does the youth know? when he has finished his education — but how much does he care? and about how many orders of things does he care? In fact, how large is the room in which he finds his feet set? and, therefore, how full is the life he has before him?
